BMW diesel HVO100 – The Renewable Fuel Revolution

Starting in 2025, all diesel models produced in Germany are filled ex-works with HVO100 – a renewable fuel capable of cutting CO₂ emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil diesel. This initiative shows BMW Group’s commitment to offering realistic, sustainable solutions for European fleet operators where full electrification is not yet feasible. What is HVO100 and why does it matter? HVO stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, a synthetic diesel made from renewable feedstocks like used cooking oil and vegetable fats. The “100” means it’s 100% pure renewable diesel. BMW uses Neste MY Renewable Diesel™, produced in Finland, across its German plants in Munich, Dingolfing, Regensburg and Leipzig. This advanced fuel delivers up to 90% lower CO₂ emissions from production to use (“well to wheel”). Each new BMW diesel receives an initial fill of 5–8 litres of HVO100 before delivery – a symbolic yet significant start to the brand’s Carbon Neutral Fuel (CNF) strategy. BMW diesel HVO100 – A solution for modern fleets At Fleet Europe Days 2025, BMW presented its new system that verifies every refuelling process in fleet operations. The data from each vehicle’s onboard system is compared with the payment data from the fleet operator. This ensures every drop of fuel can be tracked and certified as HVO100 – an essential step toward a “CNF-only fleet.” Pilot programs are already underway in Germany and Italy, providing valuable real-world data for optimisation. “Options, not bans” – BMW’s philosophy Dr. Martin Kaufmann, Head of Powertrain Development, stated: “With HVO100, we can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of diesel fleets. The technology exists – now regulation needs to catch up.” BMW continues to support technological openness, investing simultaneously in EVs, hydrogen, hybrids, and renewable fuels. The goal: customers should have choices, not restrictions. The regulatory challenge BMW calls on European policymakers to formally recognise CO₂-neutral vehicles within EU fleet legislation. Dr. Thomas Becker, Head of Policy and Sustainability, adds: “Every CO₂-saving measure should count – including renewable fuels. We need pragmatic rules that accelerate innovation, not block it.” The company urges rapid national adoption of the RED III directive, requiring at least a 30% GHG reduction from fuels by 2025.
