ITP Tires in Romania: What Inspectors Check and How to Avoid Failing<\/h2>\n

There’s a specific group of drivers<\/a> who arrive at the ITP with a freshly serviced car<\/a>, on time, documentation in order \u2014 and still fail the inspection. Not because of the engine, the brakes, or the exhaust<\/a> system. Because of the tires. What looks like a minor oversight at the tire shop can turn a routine RAR<\/a> visit into a wasted day and an unplanned expense. Tires are systematically checked at every periodic<\/a> technical inspection<\/strong>, and the criteria are clear, standardized, and non-negotiable.<\/p>\n

What Inspectors Actually Check on Tires<\/h3>\n

RAR<\/a> inspectors follow a standardized protocol for tire verification. This is not a cursory glance \u2014 each of the following points is an independent ground for failing the inspection.<\/p>\n

1. Dimensional Compliance with the CIV<\/h4>\n

The first check is the simplest and the most frequently overlooked. The dimensions of the tires fitted to the vehicle must match exactly the specifications listed in the vehicle’s registration document (CIV \u2014 Cartea de Identitate a Vehiculului).<\/strong> If the manufacturer approved size 205\/55 R16 for that model, fitting 215\/55 R16 tires \u2014 even though the difference appears minor \u2014 can constitute grounds for failure, depending on the degree of deviation from the approved specification.<\/p>\n

\u2139\ufe0f Technical Note<\/a>:<\/strong> Some vehicles have multiple approved tire dimensions listed in the CIV, covering different trim and equipment variants. Check all relevant fields in the CIV before concluding that a mounted size is non-compliant.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

2. Load and Speed Index<\/h4>\n

Printed on the sidewall of every tire are two critical values: the load index<\/strong> (maximum load capacity per wheel, expressed as a number) and the speed index<\/strong> (maximum safe operating speed, expressed as a letter).<\/p>\n

These values cannot be lower<\/strong> than those specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Fitting tires with a lower load or speed index than the minimum required is grounds for failing the ITP \u2014 and in real driving conditions, a direct safety risk.<\/p>\n
