\nA groundbreaking step for sustainable production<\/h3>\n

BMW<\/a> Group Plant Leipzig is set to become the world\u2019s first car<\/a> plant to receive hydrogen via a dedicated pipeline<\/strong>. The initiative, developed in partnership with MITNETZ GAS GmbH<\/strong> and ONTRAS Gastransport GmbH<\/strong>, marks a pivotal milestone in BMW\u2019s decarbonization roadmap.<\/p>\n

The two-kilometre link<\/strong> will include a pressure and measurement system and will connect the plant to Germany\u2019s future national hydrogen network<\/strong>. Construction is expected to be completed by mid-2027<\/strong>, at which point all hydrogen deliveries by truck will be discontinued.<\/p>\n

\n

Hydrogen powering the production lines<\/h3>\n

\u201cWith supplies coming in via the pipeline, we will be able to use hydrogen in completely new ways \u2013 especially for our most energy-intensive processes, such as our curing ovens in the paintshop,\u201d explains Petra Peterh\u00e4nsel<\/strong>, Director of BMW<\/a> Group Plant Leipzig.<\/p>\n

The plant already runs 11 fuel-flexible burners<\/strong> that can operate on either natural gas or hydrogen \u2013 a world-first innovation<\/strong> in the automotive industry. This flexibility ensures continuity while paving the way for a zero-emission production process.<\/p>\n

\n

From forklifts to full-scale infrastructure<\/h3>\n

BMW<\/a> Leipzig was also a European pioneer in hydrogen-powered logistics<\/strong>, deploying fuel cell forklifts and tug trains<\/strong> as early as 2013. Today, more than 230 hydrogen vehicles<\/strong> operate across nine refuelling stations inside the plant.<\/p>\n

The pipeline connection will eliminate the need for hydrogen cylinder trucks<\/strong>, significantly cutting down on logistics emissions<\/a> and costs while ensuring a constant, clean energy flow.<\/p>\n

\n

Germany\u2019s 9,000 km hydrogen network<\/h3>\n

The core hydrogen network<\/strong> is part of a nationwide infrastructure project<\/strong> spanning 9,000 kilometres<\/strong> of dedicated hydrogen pipelines. It will be gradually rolled out until 2032<\/strong>, linking industrial hubs and integrating Germany into the European transregional hydrogen system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With this project, BMW<\/a> positions itself at the forefront of industrial sustainability<\/strong>, demonstrating that the future of automotive manufacturing is green, efficient, and hydrogen-driven<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
