Long vehicle – what it means and when it applies

According to EU Directive 96/53/EC and national traffic codes, a long vehicle is: a single vehicle over 12 meters long; or a vehicle combination exceeding 16.5–18.75 meters, depending on its configuration. 📏 Common examples Articulated buses (up to 18 m) Heavy trucks with semi-trailers Tractor–trailer road trains Oversized convoys (over 19 m, require permit) These vehicles must be clearly marked with a yellow “LONG VEHICLE” sign and equipped with reflective strips for visibility. 🚦 Signage and safety Long vehicles must: display reflective warning plates at the rear; maintain greater following distances; avoid routes marked with “No long vehicles” restrictions.
