The P0100 – MAF Circuit code is one of the most common intake-related OBD2 faults. When triggered, the engine control module detects a malfunction within the Mass Air Flow sensor circuit.

This does not always mean the sensor itself is defective. In many cases, P0100 – MAF Circuit points to wiring faults, signal interruption, or voltage supply issues.

Correct diagnosis prevents unnecessary parts replacement.

What Does the Code Indicate?

The Mass Air Flow sensor measures incoming air mass in grams per second. The ECU uses this data to calculate fuel injection and boost control.

When the signal:

  • is missing

  • is outside expected range

  • shows electrical interruption

the ECM stores P0100 – MAF Circuit.

How the MAF Sensor Works

Most modern vehicles use a hot-wire or hot-film MAF sensor.

The sensor maintains a heated element. As air flows across it, the cooling effect changes resistance. The ECU calculates airflow based on this variation.

Contamination or electrical disturbance directly affects accuracy.

Common Symptoms

  • Engine hesitation

  • Reduced power

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Rough idle

  • Black smoke (diesel engines)

  • Check Engine Light

Some vehicles enter a default fueling strategy when the sensor fails.

Root Causes

  1. Contaminated MAF element

  2. Damaged wiring harness

  3. Loose or corroded connector

  4. Blown fuse in sensor circuit

  5. Rare ECM malfunction

Professional Diagnostic Approach

  1. OBD2 scan and freeze-frame review

  2. Live data monitoring (g/s at idle and load)

  3. Voltage supply verification

  4. Ground integrity check

  5. Comparative test with known-good sensor

Repair or Replace?

Cleaning often resolves the issue if contamination is present.

Use only dedicated MAF cleaner spray. Do not physically touch the sensing element.

If wiring damage is detected, repair must be completed before replacing the sensor.

Estimated Repair Costs (EU)

  • MAF cleaner: €10–€20

  • Aftermarket sensor: €40–€120

  • OEM sensor: €120–€300

  • Wiring repair: €30–€100

Final Verdict

The P0100 – MAF Circuit code requires systematic diagnosis.

In many cases, the problem is electrical rather than mechanical.

Testing before replacing components saves money and prevents repeated failures.

Accurate airflow data is critical for engine efficiency, emissions control and turbo performance.
