The BMW Group Hams Hall engine plant near Birmingham has reached a major milestone in 2026, celebrating 25 years of continuous engine production. Since production began in 2001, the facility has delivered more than 7.6 million engines to BMW Group brands worldwide.
A cornerstone of BMW Group’s global production network
BMW Group Hams Hall supplies petrol engines for BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce, including powertrains for plug-in hybrid vehicles. Its portfolio ranges from three- and four-cylinder engines to high-performance V8 units, while the iconic V12 engine is assembled exclusively for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars through a dedicated, highly specialized process.
Proven sustainability and efficiency gains
One of the plant’s most remarkable achievements is a 61% reduction in energy consumption per engine produced compared to its first full year of operation. Despite significantly increased output, total site energy usage has remained stable.
Key sustainability highlights:
-
100% renewable external electricity
-
continuous reduction of natural gas consumption
-
full alignment with BMW iFACTORY principles
This positions Hams Hall as a benchmark for modern, efficient engine manufacturing.
Digital transformation and the SpOTTO robot
Digitalization plays a central role at BMW Group Hams Hall. In 2024, the autonomous robot dog SpOTTO joined the plant’s operations, collecting visual, thermal and acoustic data to support predictive maintenance and process optimization.
All data feeds into a fully connected digital twin, enabling advanced production planning, quality assurance and operational transparency.
25 years of continuous growth
Over the past quarter-century, BMW Group Hams Hall has continuously evolved, reinforcing its role as a key powertrain hub within BMW Group’s global manufacturing network. Even as electrification advances, the plant remains essential to BMW’s technology-open powertrain strategy.
