The P0095 OBD2 trouble code indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a malfunction in the Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 circuit.

Many modern engines use multiple temperature sensors to accurately measure the temperature of air entering the engine. The IAT Sensor 2 provides important information that helps the ECU adjust:

  • fuel injection timing

  • air-fuel mixture

  • ignition timing

  • turbocharger boost control

If the ECU detects an abnormal signal or loss of signal from this sensor circuit, it will store the P0095 diagnostic trouble code and illuminate the Check Engine Light.

Symptoms of Code P0095

Vehicles affected by the P0095 code may experience several symptoms:

  • Check Engine Light illuminated

  • Reduced engine performance

  • Rough idle

  • Poor fuel economy

  • Hard starting

  • Engine hesitation during acceleration

In turbocharged engines, incorrect intake air temperature readings may also affect boost pressure control.

Common Causes of P0095

Typical causes of the P0095 trouble code include:

  • Faulty Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2

  • Damaged wiring in the sensor circuit

  • Loose or corroded electrical connectors

  • Short circuit to ground or power

  • Faulty ECU input signal

  • Sensor contamination from oil or debris

In some vehicles, the IAT sensor is integrated with the MAF sensor, which can also cause this code.

How Serious Is Code P0095

The P0095 code is generally considered moderately serious.

Although the vehicle will usually remain drivable, incorrect temperature readings can cause:

  • inefficient fuel combustion

  • higher fuel consumption

  • increased emissions

  • reduced engine performance

Over time, this can affect engine efficiency.

How to Diagnose Code P0095

A technician will typically follow these diagnostic steps:

  1. Scan the vehicle using an OBD2 scanner

  2. Check live data for intake air temperature readings

  3. Inspect the IAT sensor and wiring harness

  4. Test sensor resistance using a multimeter

  5. Check voltage reference and ground signals

  6. Inspect ECU connections

Comparing the intake air temperature reading with ambient temperature can quickly reveal sensor faults.

How to Fix Code P0095

Possible repair solutions include:

  • replacing the Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2

  • repairing damaged wiring

  • cleaning electrical connectors

  • replacing the MAF sensor (if the IAT sensor is integrated)

  • clearing the fault code after repair

In most cases, replacing the faulty sensor resolves the issue.

Vehicles Commonly Affected by P0095

The P0095 trouble code may appear in many modern vehicles equipped with advanced air intake monitoring systems, including:

  • Ford

  • Volkswagen

  • BMW

  • Toyota

  • Hyundai

  • Kia

  • Mercedes-Benz

Vehicles with turbocharged engines are particularly sensitive to intake air temperature readings.
