After reconnecting the battery on a Volkswagen Golf 7, many drivers notice that all the dashboard lights turn on — ABS, ESP, steering, airbag, and more. This “Christmas tree dashboard” might look alarming, but it’s actually normal and temporary.
🔍 Why this happens
When the battery is disconnected, several control modules (ABS, ESP, steering assist, etc.) lose synchronization with the CAN network. As a result, multiple warning lights appear because the car cannot detect the correct sensor readings yet.
Typical warnings include:
-
Error: Workshop!
-
Steering Assist Failure
-
ESC / ABS Error
-
Hill Hold unavailable
🔧 How to fix it quickly
-
Ensure the battery voltage is above 12.4V.
-
Turn the ignition on and wait about 30 seconds.
-
Turn the steering wheel fully left and right to recalibrate the G85 angle sensor.
-
Drive straight for a few meters — the dashboard should return to normal.
🧠 Technical explanation
The G85 steering angle sensor and G201 brake pressure sensor lose stored calibration data when power is removed. Once the system detects new data (via steering movement and brake use), the control units synchronize again and clear all fault codes automatically.
💡 Prevent it next time
Use an OBD memory saver during battery replacement. It keeps the voltage stable and prevents module resets. Also, wait a few minutes after switching off the engine before removing the battery terminals.

🔚 Conclusion
The “Christmas tree dashboard” is not a failure — just a temporary desynchronization after power loss. A quick steering calibration and a short drive will restore everything to normal.
