How a Brake Caliper Works

The brake caliper is a vital part of the disc braking system, responsible for applying pressure to the brake pads and ultimately slowing down the vehicle. It works through hydraulic force and friction.

🔧 Operation Principle

  1. When the brake pedal is pressed, brake fluid is sent from the master cylinder to the caliper.

  2. Inside the caliper, a hydraulic piston (or more) pushes the brake pads against the disc.

  3. The resulting friction slows down the disc, and therefore the wheel.

  4. The more pressure applied, the greater the braking force.

🔩 Types of Calipers

  • Fixed Caliper – has pistons on both sides of the disc. Provides more even pressure.

  • Floating (Sliding) Caliper – has one piston and moves side to side. More common and cost-effective.

🧰 Why It’s Important

  • Ensures even braking and stability.

  • A key component for safe driving and stopping distance.

  • Faulty or seized calipers can cause uneven braking or brake fade.

🧼 Maintenance Tips

  • Inspect brake pads and discs regularly.

  • Replace brake fluid as recommended.

  • Clean and lubricate caliper slides and pins periodically.

1. What are the symptoms of a seized brake caliper?
➡️ The car pulls to one side, squeaks during braking, or the brake doesn’t release properly.

2. Can I replace only the caliper without changing pads?
➡️ Yes, but it’s best to inspect the pads and disc. If wear is uneven, replace them too.

3. How much does a caliper replacement cost?
➡️ Depending on the car, it ranges from €30 to €150 + labor.

4. Can a brake caliper be refurbished?
➡️ Yes, if it’s not cracked. Seals, piston, and slides can be replaced.

5. What happens if I drive with a stuck caliper?
➡️ The disc may overheat, pads wear faster, and braking efficiency drops. It’s dangerous and can cause accidents.
