🚛 What is a long vehicle

A long vehicle refers to any single vehicle or combination (tractor + semi-trailer, articulated bus, heavy truck) that exceeds the standard legal length allowed for its type under European traffic law.

According to EU Directive 96/53/EC and national traffic codes, a long vehicle is:

  • a single vehicle over 12 meters long;

  • or a vehicle combination exceeding 16.5–18.75 meters, depending on its configuration.

📏 Common examples

  • Articulated buses (up to 18 m)

  • Heavy trucks with semi-trailers

  • Tractor–trailer road trains

  • Oversized convoys (over 19 m, require permit)

These vehicles must be clearly marked with a yellow “LONG VEHICLE” sign and equipped with reflective strips for visibility.

🚦 Signage and safety

Long vehicles must:

  • display reflective warning plates at the rear;

  • maintain greater following distances;

  • avoid routes marked with “No long vehicles” restrictions.

For oversized or special transport, an escort and special authorization are mandatory to ensure road safety.
