Your fuel gauge says empty… but you know you’ve got gas?
If you’ve recently disconnected the battery, swapped the REC module, or you’re just wondering why the fuel gauge stays pinned to zero, even though you’re sure there’s fuel in the tank, welcome to the club.
I’ve been there — with “4 solid liters” in the tank — and the dashboard still claimed I was bone dry.
What’s really going on?
On the Opel Astra H, the fuel level sensor (float inside the fuel pump) sends a resistance signal to the ECU. If the actual fuel volume drops below 5–6 liters, the system treats it as empty, and sends a zero signal to the instrument cluster.
🧠 It’s not a fault — it’s by design. The system is programmed to ignore low, unstable readings to avoid false movement on the gauge (especially on slopes or during cornering).
What does Op-Com show?
In IPC → Measuring Blocks, you’ll see:
-
Displayed Fuel Level = 0
-
The “Range” might still display (e.g., 60 km), because it’s calculated based on past consumption data
-
But the needle on the gauge stays down, due to lack of a valid sensor input
When will it start working again?
Simple: Refuel with at least 10 liters of fuel.
The needle will rise within a few seconds, and in Op-Com you’ll see values above 10–15%.
Fuel level vs. dashboard behavior:
| Actual liters | Gauge movement | Op-Com reading |
|---|---|---|
| 0–4 L | Dead zero | 0 |
| 5–6 L | Maybe a flicker | Still 0 or unstable |
| 7–9 L | Slight movement | 5–10% |
| 10+ L | Normal needle rise | 10–20% |
| 20+ L | Full range visible | 30–40%+ |
❌ What won’t fix it?
-
Disconnecting battery
-
Changing REC module
-
Performing gauge test
-
Driving a few kilometers
📌 If you don’t have at least 6 liters, the fuel gauge simply won’t move — no matter how much you swear you’re not empty.
✅ Conclusion:
Don’t panic when the needle stays down. If you know you have fuel, you’re not broken — you’re just below the minimum reading threshold. Refuel with a solid 10–15 liters, and everything comes back to life.
