Niels van Roij Design Revives 1995 Icon with Audi TTS Restomod Project
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – The Audi TT has long occupied a unique space in automotive history, evolving from a radical design study into a cult classic defined by its geometric minimalism. To celebrate this heritage, Dutch design house Niels van Roij Design, under the specialized label Autoforma, has unveiled a breathtaking “Restomod” project. This one-off Audi TTS is designed to strip away the production compromises of the original model, returning its silhouette to the pure, unadulterated DNA of the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show concept.
Far from being a simple tuning exercise, the Autoforma TTS is a coachbuilt masterpiece. It reimagines the first-generation Roadster not as a used sports car, but as a modern interpretation of what the TT was always meant to be: a rolling piece of industrial art.

Architecture of Minimalism: Reviving the Concept DNA
The core philosophy of the Niels van Roij Audi TTS project was “purification.” The design team meticulously analyzed the original 1995 concept to identify the elements that were lost during the transition to mass production. The most radical change is the complete removal of the fabric soft-top mechanism. In its place, Autoforma engineered a fixed rear deck cover made from high-tech composite materials.
This structural change transforms the car’s profile, creating a flat, continuous line that emphasizes the “Bauhaus” circles of the wheel arches. The removal of the antenna, the rear spoiler, and even the visible weld seams on the body contributes to an ultra-clean finish that echoes the futuristic visions of the mid-90s.

Industrial Details and Technical Aesthetics
The front and rear fascias have undergone a significant “Glow-up” to align with modern design standards while maintaining a retro-throwback factor.
-
Horizontal Front Design: The air intakes have been redesigned to be flatter and wider, giving the TTS a lower, more planted appearance. The use of mesh grilles and visible Torx screws adds an industrial, technical character.
-
Mirror Placement: In a bold move that heightens the “Concept-Car Vibe,” the side mirrors have been relocated from the doors directly onto the window glass, a signature styling cue of experimental design studies.
-
Laser-Cut Accents: The side windows feature custom laser-cut metal frames, while the A-pillars are finished in a contrasting tone to break up the visual mass of the upper body.
A Masterclass in Paint and Finish
The aesthetic cohesion of the Audi TTS Restomod is solidified by its sophisticated two-tone paint scheme. The upper portion of the vehicle is finished in Nimbus Grey Pearl, a legendary Audi color that debuted with the early TT models. This is contrasted by a matte grey finish on the lower sections and the side skirts, which feature newly integrated air intakes to improve thermal management and visual dynamics.
The stance of the vehicle has also been optimized. By widening the track and subtly lowering the suspension, Autoforma has given the TTS a modern “presence” that the original production car lacked. The rear is rounded off with a custom diffuser and a perfectly integrated exhaust system, ensuring that the car looks as functional as it does beautiful.
Focus on Aesthetic Preservation over Performance
Unlike many restomods that prioritize thousand-horsepower engines, this Audi TTS project remains focused on the emotional and visual experience. While the technical base remains the reliable Audi TTS powertrain, the project aims to prove that design, rather than top-speed records, is what grants a vehicle immortality. It is a vehicle designed for the “purist” who values the tactile feel of metal and the harmony of a perfect line over 0-100 km/h statistics.
A One-Off Statement for the Modern Collector
This Audi TTS Restomod is a strict one-off, commissioned as a personal dream car for a private owner. It serves as a powerful reminder of why the Audi TT became an icon in the first place. By merging the nostalgia of the 1990s with the precision of modern coachbuilding, Niels van Roij Design has created a vehicle that is neither kitschy nor overdone, but deeply respectful of its origins.
As the automotive industry moves toward increasingly complex designs, this project stands as a testament to the power of simplicity. It is a modern interpretation of a classic that reminds us: sometimes, to move forward, you have to look back at where the dream started.
