The motorcycle starting system is similar to that of cars since both rely on an internal combustion engine. However, the compact engine design and transverse mounting of motorcycles bring specific mechanical challenges and unique starter configurations.
Its purpose is to rotate the crankshaft between 60 and 100 rpm, overcoming compression and internal friction until combustion begins.

⚙️ Main Components

A typical motorcycle starting system includes:

  • Starter motor – provides the initial crank rotation;

  • Release mechanism – disengages the starter once the engine fires;

  • Reduction gear – lowers RPM and increases torque;

  • Relay or solenoid (in some models).

The starter pinion drives the primary gear through reduction, converting the high speed and low torque of the motor into low speed and high torque for the crankshaft.

⚡ Electric Motor Principle

The starter motor operates on direct current (DC), converting electrical energy into mechanical motion through electromagnetic force.
A commutator reverses the current direction in the rotor windings, ensuring continuous rotation.
Modern starters use high-performance permanent magnets (such as strontium ferrite) for compact size and strong torque output.

🔩 Internal Construction

A starter consists of:

  • Stator (magnetic field generation),

  • Rotor/armature (rotating coil),

  • Carbon brushes (current transfer),

  • Pinion gear (engagement with the crankshaft).

For instance, the Yamaha FJR 1300 starter develops 630 W, drawing about 77 A during the first revolution when voltage drops to 9V.

🔧 Types of Starters

There are two main designs:

  1. Permanent engagement starter – the pinion remains fixed and uses a one-way clutch (most common).

  2. Screw-push starter – the pinion moves toward the flywheel mechanically (less common).

Many systems incorporate a planetary gear set to optimize torque at low RPMs.

🔗 Conclusion

The motorcycle starting system is a compact masterpiece of electromechanical design. Though its principle matches that of automotive systems, its engineering emphasizes efficiency, reduced weight, and rapid response for modern bikes.
