What is a turbocharged engine?
Turbocharging is a method of increasing power in internal combustion engines by compressing intake air using the energy from exhaust gases. A turbocharger contains:
-
a turbine driven by exhaust gases,
-
a compressor that forces more air into the engine.
This results in higher oxygen intake and allows for more fuel combustion, thus boosting power.
VGT Turbo
Variable Geometry Turbos adjust the flow of exhaust gases using vanes, improving efficiency across all RPM ranges and reducing turbo lag.
Twin-Turbo vs. Bi-Turbo
-
Twin-Turbo: two identical turbos working in parallel.
-
Bi-Turbo: sequential system – one turbo for low RPM, one for high RPM.
Turbo vs. Supercharging
-
Supercharger: mechanically driven (direct from engine).
Twincharging
Some high-performance engines combine both systems for optimal response and power output.
