Volkswagen R Unveils Radical Golf R 24h Concept to Celebrate 25th Anniversary
NÜRBURGRING, Germany – To mark the 25th anniversary of the “R” brand, Volkswagen R has officially presented the Golf R 24h, a high-performance racing concept designed specifically for the grueling 24 Hours of Nürburgring. This reveal marks a strategic shift for the brand, moving from the front-wheel-drive GTI Clubsport 24h to a more sophisticated all-wheel-drive platform that aligns with the core DNA of the Golf R production models.
Developed in close collaboration with long-term partner Max Kruse Racing, the Golf R 24h is not a mere styling exercise. It serves as a precursor to the brand’s official return to the “Green Hell” in competitive racing slated for 2027. The project honors the legacy of the original Golf IV R32 from 2002 while looking toward a future of extreme internal combustion performance.
Motorsport Engineering: AWD and Aero Dominance
The transition to the Golf R 24h architecture brings back the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system to the racetrack. Unlike its predecessor, the GTI Clubsport 24h, which relied on the front wheels for traction, the new Golf R 24h utilizes a race-tuned AWD system to manage the immense power required for the Nordschleife’s complex elevations.
The aerodynamic package has been completely overhauled for maximum downforce:
-
Front Section: An aggressive, oversized front splitter extends forward to pin the front axle to the asphalt.
-
Widebody Design: Flared fender extensions accommodate a wider track and professional motorsport slicks, with integrated vents to manage wheel arch pressure.
-
Swan-Neck Rear Wing: A massive, top-mounted rear wing dominates the rear profile, working in tandem with a radical diffuser to optimize high-speed stability.
-
Vented Hood: Large apertures in the hood ensure the turbocharged powertrain remains cooled during endurance sessions.
Powertrain and Technical Innovation
While official performance figures remain partially under wraps, the Golf R 24h is powered by a heavily modified version of the 2.0-liter EA888 turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Industry experts estimate the output to exceed the 343 hp produced by the outgoing GTI racer, with power likely pushed closer to the 350-380 hp range to fully utilize the traction benefits of the all-wheel-drive system.
One of the most distinctive features is the side-exit exhaust system. By moving the exhaust to the side, engineers have optimized the underbody airflow for the rear diffuser and reduced the overall weight of the piping. Despite the visual absence of the signature quad-exit tips found on road-going R models, the Golf R 24h retains a pure internal combustion setup, likely fueled by high-performance bioethanol (E20) to maintain sustainability goals within the race regulations.

From Showcar to Racing Reality
Currently presented as a showcar on the Ring Boulevard, the Golf R 24h is already undergoing rigorous development. Volkswagen R intends to use this vehicle as a rolling laboratory to test technical innovations under real competitive conditions. The feedback from professional drivers like Benjamin Leuchter will directly influence the final racing version and, potentially, future limited-edition “R” road cars.
Reinhold Ivenz, Head of Volkswagen R, described the vehicle as the “most spectacular Golf R to date.” By returning to the Nürburgring 24h race, the brand reaffirms its commitment to its racing roots, proving that the “R” badge remains synonymous with uncompromising performance.
