Why Overtaking Can Be Dangerous Even on Straight Roads

A straight, clear road seems like the ideal place to overtake. However, road safety data shows that fatal crashes often occur in these very conditions—not in curves or bad weather.

1. Misjudging the oncoming vehicle’s speed

An approaching car might look distant, but at highway speeds (100–120 km/h), it covers distance very fast. A slight miscalculation can turn deadly.

2. Underestimating your own car’s power

If your car lacks torque or acceleration, or the vehicle ahead speeds up during your overtake, you risk being trapped in the oncoming lane.

3. Unexpected road hazards

Side roads, animals, pedestrians or hidden obstacles can appear even on straight roads. Overtaking reduces your reaction options drastically.

4. Other drivers’ unpredictable behavior

Drivers often change lanes or brake without signals. While overtaking, any erratic move from others can result in disaster.

5. Overconfidence: “It’s straight, it’s safe”

This false sense of safety leads drivers to take risks. The comfort of a straight road often leads to carelessness, speeding, or lack of attention.
